The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has released an infographic with headline figures from the forthcoming Australian Adoptions 2016-17 report due for release in December 2017. The figures show that in 2016-17, there were 315 finalised adoptions, a rise after a consistent decline in numbers since the early 90s, following a peak of almost 900 finalised adoptions between 1993-96. The report showed that 78 per cent of adopted children were Australian, with all inter-country adopted children coming from Asia, with the greatest percentage coming from Taiwan. The proportion of children adopted by carers rose from a quarter in the previous 2015-16 report to almost half, a record statistic. View the infographic.
