This half day workshop is designed to assist social workers, psychologists and counsellors to develop a better understanding of working with couples from an attachment framework. This is relevant for social workers who work therapeutically with couples. The education material in the presentation is based on theoretical knowledge Attachment specialists and The Circle of Security.

All workers who work therapeutically with couples.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the workshop participants will have:

  • a revised knowledge of attachment types and how these types present in adult relationships
  • examined how to use the Circle of Security graphic and core sensitivities with couples
  • explored how to use attachment based questions in couple work.

Meet the Presenters

Narelle Nelles, B Soc Wk, MASSW Acc is a skilled social worker with over 35 years’ experience working with carers providing alternative care for children and with the children in the placement. For a number of years Narelle worked intensively with placing children of all ages in permanent families, working therapeutically with children, training the parents and providing ongoing family support. Narelle is in private practice and in addition to working with adoptive and foster families, Narelle works with families in their homes, particularly those who have come to the attention of Department of Child Safety, to develop parenting skills and enhance family relationships.

Susan Gregory, BA (Psych) M Counselling, Cert.IV Workplace Training and Assessment, has 35 years’ experience working in adoption, fostering and child and family welfare as a counsellor and consultant; running education groups and assessment for alternative carers. Susan has worked in her private counselling practice for the last 20 years maintaining a generalised counselling practice and working with parents to manage children’s behaviour through the parent child relationship. Susan has retained a specific interest in adoptions and fostering, working therapeutically with foster carers, birth parents, adult adopted people and adoptive parents.

Both Susan and Narelle work in their practice with clients and families from an attachment focus and believe that by understanding and promoting healthy attachments this serves to enhance family connections and promotes the ability to form lasting relationships.

Narelle and Susan have been delivering training for professionals, adoptive and foster carers and parents for the last 8 years. Their client groups have included Child Protection agencies in Queensland and the Northern Territory, non-Government agencies as well as counsellor professional development training.
